Lithium ion batteries are the most commonly used type of rechargeable batteries for a host of electronic gadgets meant for consumer use. These batteries are being extensively used in almost every consumer electronic product today. Though these batteries were initially designed for the purpose of small-scale consumer level products, they are now being also employed in manufacturing defense products and aerospace industries as they have a very high-density.

These batteries are available in a number of shapes and sizes in order to fit in different kinds of gadgets. They have a superb energy-weight balance and lose very small amount of charge when in use. These batteries have no effect on the memory of the gadget and are quite convenient to use. However, they must be handled with care as they can potentially dangerous, if mishandled or leaked. Ineffective handling may also result in their reduced lifespan. Also, the life span of a lithium battery is dependent on the time since they were first manufactured and not on the basis of their use.

Nowadays, most of the latest electronic gadgets like PDA's, laptops and digital cameras make use only of lithium-based batteries. These batteries are potentially safe and do not pose any hazards, if used safely and correctly. A lithium battery is composed of several electrochemical components, which cause the chemical energy to convert into electrical energy. The structure of a lithium ion laptop battery is basically composed of two electrodes, an anode and a cathode. The battery produces the electrical current which helps to give the desired voltage required to make the gadget work.

The electrolytes present in these batteries are used to store chemical energy on the surface of the metal plates located within the battery cell and this electrolyte also serves as the conductor for the battery. When used properly, the electrode materials and liquid electrolyte do not react till the time the battery is sealed and used properly. These kind of electrolyte used in lithium batteries can vary from battery to battery depending upon the company manufacturing it. Some companies use electrolytes made up of a gel-like polymer film which can allow ion exchange. There is also other variety of electrolyte available in dry polymer design which further simplifies the use of battery in regard to its fabrication, safety and enhanced conductivity.

The lithium ion laptop batteries are often known to be in the stage of deep discharge. This is a stage where the battery takes a long duration of time to recharge itself. A lithium ion laptop battery usually takes a time of 3-4 hours to recharge itself. But, if the battery enters the state of deep discharge, it may take up to 42 hours to recharge itself. It may also be possible, that once a battery enters the state of deep discharge, it may fail to get recharged again and have to be rendered useless. The state of deep discharge arises only when these lithium ion laptop batteries are not used for long durations of time even if they are fully charged when last used.
